Here is the exact step-by-step diagnostic and repair process to drain your dishwasher and save your hard-earned money.


The Hydraulics of Dishwasher Drainage


To fix the problem, you have to understand where that water is supposed to go. Your dishwasher does not have a massive, straight-shot drain pipe. Instead, it relies on a small electric drain pump that forces water through a flexible plastic hose, which then connects either directly to your garbage disposal or to a specialized countertop valve called an Air Gap.


If any single point along this mini-plumbing highway becomes restricted, gravity wins, and the dirty kitchen wastewater flows right back into the bottom of your dishwasher tub.


Step 1: Inspect the Sump Basin and Backflow Flapper


Before disconnecting any hoses, we need to check the primary defense line inside the machine itself.


1 Clear the Water: Grab a small plastic cup and a sponge, and scoop out as much of the standing water as possible into a bucket.


2 Remove the Assembly: Pull out the bottom dish rack. Twist the cylindrical mesh filter counterclockwise and lift it out. (If this filter is coated in grease and old food chunks, wash it with hot soapy water immediately).
